introduced a change in how the data that Openfire sends over a websocket is composed (it’s now more type-safe). With this, a small formatting difference was introduced: instead of a collapsed element (<open/>) an expanded element (<open></open>) is now used in certain places.

The Smack framework does not seem to handle this very well. Openfire should send collapsed elements instead of expanded ones, if only to retain compatibility.
