Openfire can't detect broken clients' connections

Description

last time reported at: http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/message/197488 but it is really a very long standing issue (i have seen such behavior 3-4 years ago).

It seems that if Openfire server and client machine are not directly connected by a network cable, but instead very is at least one switch between them, then Openfire can't detect broken client connections. That is, if you pull lan cable from your laptop, you still show up as online. And session of such connection keeps updating it Last Activity. Don't know how this could be happening (some packets cached on a switch and constantly being resent to Openfire??). I think Openfire oath to handle this better. Laptops and WiFi are almost everywhere, mobility has increased. Such issue will create a lot of mess, because you can't be sure that your contact is really online. And this can then bring memory leaks and server freeze problems, as already described in OF-70.

This can be closed as duplicate, if this issue will be fixed by patch. But it looks somewhat different, as server is working fine for me and for others, just doesnt close broken sessions. I would be glad to test any patches for this.

One more thing. When i'm testing at home, and i have PC as a server and client and laptop with a client is connecting via ICS with cable to the same PC, if i pull the cable out of laptop it detects such disconnection on the client on the PC in milliseconds. So, it can detect such things, but not in a normal switched network. Maybe this is network protocols related issue (TCP, etc.).

pasting all logs from that day, though i dont think there is something related:

Ok, there's a few things going on here. First, let me address all of the stacktraces that you posted. They're completely unrelated, but do indicate some small issues:

1. There's at least one VCard in your database that contains an Illegal character ( the character \ufffd ). Probably not a big deal, but someone's vcard will fail.
2. I think one of the chatrooms or MUC servers is configured incorrectly. There's a name "chat 2.jiveserver" being referenced that looks wrong. Again, probably not a big deal.

Now, to get back to the main issue: the disconnection of clients by pulling the network cable.

The behavior that you're is not that weird. Pulling your cable is indeed likely to be picked up a lot sooner than pulling a cable from the other end of a network. If you pull a cable (or cause a client to be disconnected in any other way), it can take Openfire up to a little over the amount of time that is configured in the property xmpp.client.idle (which defaults to 360000 milliseconds if not set) to detect that the client went down. If you did not change that property, waiting for a minute is not long enough to check if Openfire detects the disconnect.

I advise you to either wait longer, or modify the value of xmpp.client.idle to a lower value, and try again.

We dont use vcards, so this is probably no big deal for us. I'm aware about that flawed MUC service, but can't delete it because of the bug in 3.6.4.

Ah.. xmpp.client.idle, i forgot about it. Actually i have it set to -1, so probably it would never disconnect. I have set it to -1 many years ago, because i feared my clients would reconnect every minute. We use old version of Exodus here (don;t ask, it was most suitable back then) and i think there were some issue with that. I can try setting it to default or 1 minute and then test with 3.6.4 version, first. Probably i need to restart server to make this change work? If it won't change anything, then at some point we can try that custom build again maybe.

As this can take longer than i thought (dont have much time for testing), maybe we should change it for 3.6.6?

Well, this is embarrassing You don't need to restart a server. I have set it to 60000 and it detects cable disconnect somewhere in a minute. Also, so far no complaints from the users about client reconnecting. I guess i will close this ticket later when i get home.
